Mary Rose is a young orphan girl who got separated from her family during the Dino Attack. After the Dino Attack, Mary Rose became the notorious pirate known as Bloody Mary.

Biography[]

Dino Attack[]

Mary Rose was born in World City on June 9, 2004, and her family celebrated her birth with a trip out into the open country. The Rose family later moved to LEGO City. In Duplo School, she became friends with her classmate Chuck.

During the initial Dino Attack invasion in April 2010, the Rose family was safely evacuated to Antarctica, where they spent many months in the refugee facilities. As the Dino Attack Team made progress in the battle against the Mutant Dinos and LEGO City was gradually being reconstructed and repopulated, the family was eager to move back to LEGO City as quickly as possible in a rushed effort to reestablish normalcy.

Mary Rose and her family returned to LEGO City, but despite being settled in an area of LEGO City supposedly free of Mutant Dinos, they were attacked by a pack of Mutant Raptors while most of the Dino Attack Team was focused on the mission to Adventurers' Island. Mary Rose was separated from her family and, over the next few days, desperately struggled to survive on the dangerous streets of a dinosaur-infested LEGO City.

Eventually, Greybeard and King Joseph Race were sent into her neighborhood to investigate the Mutant Raptor attack. Mary Rose hid in a dumpster and, fearing that they were dangerous, attacked Greybeard with a hammer. However, she mistook Greybeard for her grandfather and trusted the two Dino Attack allies, who offered to bring her back to Dino Attack Headquarters where she would be safe.

During her time in Dino Attack Headquarters, Mary Rose tried to stay close to Greybeard at all times. When Greybeard ran off in pursuit of a mole, he told Mary to wait in the Dino Attack briefing room. There, Mary was approached by Shadow, Viper, Digger, and Shannon Grimton, and Grimton was able to coax Mary Rose into talking about the Mutant Raptors that attacked her neighborhood. This data helped the elite agents realize that the Mutant Dinos were not yet cleared from LEGO City and were in fact preparing for a final battle.

Before Greybeard went to the front lines of the battlefield during the final battle, he said goodbye to Mary Rose in the headquarters' garage and told her to again wait in the briefing room until his return. Before Greybeard's return, Mutant Lizards and Mutant Raptors began invading Dino Attack Headquarters, and Mary hid in the air vents. Greybeard and a few of his comrades burst into the briefing room and rescued Mary from the Mutant Dinos.

Mary Rose traveled with Greybeard to the top floor of Dino Attack Headquarters, where the Portal Operations Team had built a Super Teleport Pad. Concerned for Mary's safety, Greybeard told her to use the Teleport Pad to return to Antarctica, and promised that he would follow soon. Mary Rose waited in the Antarctica refugee facilities for the remainder of the final battle, with Talia Kaahs watching over her.

After the end of the Dino Attack war, Mary Rose returned to LEGO City and was reunited with Greybeard. Shortly afterward, the old pirate officially adopted her as his granddaughter. They spent the New Year's Eve together on Adventurers' Island.

Pirates[]

Mary Rose as a pirate

For the next ten years, Mary Rose was raised by Greybeard on Pirates Forbidden Island. He accustomed her to a pirate's life, teaching her skills in sailing and swordfighting. Throughout the years, she remained unaware of the fact that she was adopted, still believing Greybeard to be her actual grandfather.

In June 2020, shortly before Mary's sixteenth birthday, Greybeard secured enough money to buy a ship and crew. As her "Sweet Sixteen" present, Mary was named Quartermaster of the Beatrice, making her second-in-command to Captain Greybeard. Greybeard also introduced her to the crew by the nickname "Bloody Mary", believing it would be a more fitting title for a pirate. They set sail to Trident Isle, in search of the mythical Hourglass of Atlantis.

On the evening of June 8, Mary Rose discovered her crewmates plotting a mutiny against Greybeard. Mary and One-Eyed Pete fought the mutineers into submission, and Mary forced their leader Vile Villano to walk the plank as punishment. Afterward, she argued with Greybeard about letting the mutiny happen, and she accused him of caring more about the Hourglass of Atlantis than about her.

On June 9, the Beatrice arrived at Trident Isle. While exploring the jungle, Mary Rose was attacked by crocodiles and suffered from PTSD, needing to be rescued by Greybeard. They discovered the Atlantean temple but could not find the Hourglass of Atlantis. Mary looked into the temple's fountain and saw visions of herself in Timeline 2004-A and Timeline 2010-A. She realized that the hourglass was inside the fountain and solved the puzzle required to find it. However, seeing herself in Timeline 2010-A also caused Mary to realize that Greybeard was not her real grandfather, and she confronted him about this.

Once the Hourglass of Atlantis was unveiled, Mary handed the mythical timepiece over to Greybeard, who was suddenly marked for death by the Golden King of Atlantis. The pirates fled Trident Isle as they were pursued by a water avatar of the Golden King. Upon reaching the Beatrice, Mary was given the hourglass and told to board the ship. She watched with horror as Greybeard offered himself up to the Golden King to save the Beatrice and its crew.

After a long night of mourning over Greybeard's apparent demise, Mary Rose was comforted by discovering a letter that he had written. She had a discussion with One-Eyed Pete about her adoption and the lives of her alternate selves, allowing her to reconcile her own identity. Stepping up and becoming Captain Bloody Mary of the Beatrice, Mary took command of the pirate crew and set sail in search of the Jewel of the Ninth Century.

Alternate Histories[]

Timeline 2004-A[]

Shortly after Mary Rose was born, the LEGO Planet was hit by the Time Freeze and Evil Ogel took over the world. Since the Rose family was on a trip in the open country, they were far from any major cities that were shelled by Mind-Control Orbs, leaving them among the few survivors. By the time Mary Rose was a teenager, she had joined the Resistance as a freedom fighter.

In 2020, Mary Rose was part of a Resistance cell including Connors, Jackson, Shacklebolt, Giles, Clyde, and Wayne. On June 9, they were discovered by a Trooper Drone patrol and were forced to battle at an apartment building. When a Scorpion Orb Launcher arrived and the battle turned hopeless, Mary was instructed by Connors to escape through the air ventilation system, since she was the only one small enough to make it through. She was also given Jackson's gas mask to protect her from the Mind-Control Orbs. As a result, Mary was the sole survivor of the group and was able to escape the apartment building alive. She started looking for other cells of the Resistance, in hopes of finding the last surviving Alpha Team agent.

Timeline 2010-A[]

Due to the Dino Attack war ending earlier with far fewer losses, the Rose family was able to move back into LEGO City without being attacked by any lingering Mutant Dinos.

As a teenager in high school, Mary Rose was a member of Drama Club and was often involved in musical theater productions. She was also dating her long-time friend Chuck. She celebrated her Sweet Sixteen birthday party on June 9, 2020 with friends and family. When her grandfather arrived at the party, Mary was elated to receive his treasured 1972 Gran Torino as a gift.

Abilities and Traits[]

Due to her young age during the Dino Attack, Mary Rose is very innocent and naive. She is sweet and kind, and although she once had the capability of throwing temper tantrums when things did not go her way, the harsh realities of the Dino Attack have stricken all anger from Mary, leaving only fear.

After her parents were killed by Mutant Raptors, Mary Rose developed some important survival skills that allowed her to escape detection by other Mutant Dinos. Mary is reportedly skilled at playing hide-and-seek, which were enhanced by her survival skills.

In the years after the Dino Attack, Mary Rose has matured into a confident young woman. She is a skilled ambidextrous swordfighter, and her aim with a flintlock pistol is accurate enough to cleanly shoot a man's hat off his head. She has grown accustomed to a pirate's life and is eager for sailing and adventure. As Quartermaster of the Beatrice, Bloody Mary does not tolerate the sexist attitudes of other pirates and is quick to assert her dominance. However, due to the trauma of being orphaned during the Dino Attack, Mary has very few clear memories of her childhood, and she nurses a crippling fear of birds and reptiles.

Because Mary believed that Greybeard is her grandfather, she was very close to the old pirate. As a young child, she only felt safe when he was near. However, she did acknowledge that he could be tough and aloof at times, and she grew frustrated by his greed and obsession with treasure, leading to arguments and drama between them. When Mary discovered that Greybeard was not actually her birth relation, she initially felt betrayed; however, she has since come around to understand that there is no shame in being adopted, and now once again acknowledges Greybeard as her grandfather. By extension, she thinks of One-Eyed Pete as her uncle.

Trivia[]

  • During the Dino Attack, Mary Rose's character combines elements of young Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson & The Olympians and Newt from Aliens.
  • PeabodySam wanted Greybeard to survive the final battle, but realized the problem that he would be a natural candidate for sacrificing himself instead of Rex, since Greybeard was much older and had nothing left to live for. Therefore, Mary Rose was introduced primarily to serve as motivation for Greybeard to not sacrifice himself by giving him a reason to live.
  • During Dino Attack: At War's End, Mary Rose was almost always referred to by her full name. The reason for this is that "Mary Rose" was originally conceived as a double given name, much like "Mary Ann" or "Billie Jean", leaving her surname unknown. It was later decided that Rose is Mary's surname for simplicity.
  • Mary Rose is the main protagonist of the Expanded Universe story Pirates of the Tropical Sea: The Passage of Time, written as part of the 2020 Dino Attack RPG "Fifteeniversary" collaboration.
  • Mary Rose's in-universe birthday, June 9, is the same day that she made her real-life debut in At War's End.
