"Who am I, and why was I watching you? Such odd questions to ask me. Aside from drones, I have not seen visitors for a long time... only natural of me to watch you, then?"
— Ben Gunn[1]

"Ben Gunn" is an old Minifig who lived in the Goo Caverns. In actuality, he is Dr. Zachary Abody, formerly known as Alpha Team elite agent Frozeen.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Zachary Abody was born on March 24, 1931.[2] While in Duplo School, Zack tried to write his name but his teacher was unable to read his handwriting, misreading it as "Zeen"; he soon adopted this as a nickname. He was close friends with George Ogel and Ronald Alexander throughout grade school,[3] and he was well aware of the love triangle between George, Ronald, and Talia Kaahs. By 1957, he was dating Faith, and they decided that they would adopt a child when they got married.[4] He was hired as a scientist by Knudsen Research Institute, and continued to work closely with Professor George Ogel and Dr. Ronald Alexander as colleagues.[5]

Zachary Abody attended the 1957 high school reunion. When Talia Kaahs caught the eyes of George Ogel and Ronald Alexander, Zack flipped a stud to see which of the two men would go speak with her first, and George won. Zack dismissed Ronald's claim that George would one day lose Talia.[3]

In 1958, Zachary Abody was asked to be best man for George and Talia's wedding. He played a major role in planning the wedding and its reception.[6] However, Talia never attended the wedding, and Ronald claimed that she had run off with another suitor.[4] Zachary could only watch helplessly from the sidelines as George fell into a depression in the following years.[5]

By 1978, Zachary and Faith had married and settled on LEGO Island. They were approached by the Infomaniac, who informed them that the Brickster had abandoned his baby brother. The Abodys agreed to adopt the infant, whom they named Peter. During Peter's childhood, they moved to LEGO Town[2] and had a pet dog.[7]

Alpha Team[]

Due to economic troubles in the year 2000, Knudsen Research Institute lost its funding, and Dr. Zachary Abody was soon laid off and could not afford to retire.[5] After a long argument with Peter, Zachary was convinced to get a new job. He sent out his application and resume to many research labs, unsure if anyone would be willing to hire in this economy.[2]

In 2001, Dr. Zachary Abody was unexpectedly contacted by Alpha Team, which had reviewed his resume and determined that his scientific background would make him an ideal candidate for their new research division. His goal would be to study the Evil OGEL Empire's bioweapons and help Alpha Team find a cure for Mind-Control Orbs. Due to the dangerous nature of this work, it would be a very high-paying position that would surely be enough to support his family, and so Zachary accepted the job offer and adopted the codename "Frozeen", derived from his childhood nicknames. Faith only knew that he was working for a LEGOLAND government agency, since any further details were too highly classified to share with the public.[5]

Although Frozeen did most of his work in the Alpha Team research labs, he passed the rigorous physical examinations, training, and tests to become a field agent as well. Alpha Team sent him on various assignments across the globe to infiltrate Evil OGEL Empire bases and retrieve intelligence on their research.[5]

On his first field assignment, Frozeen was sent to an OGEL Empire greenhouse in Brazil to collect Evil Plant samples. His intrusion was caught by General Evil, whom Frozeen recognized as George Ogel. Due to their old friendship, neither Frozeen nor General Evil were willing to fight one another, and General Evil let Frozeen go safely. Although Frozeen attempted to convince General Evil to defect to Alpha Team, General Evil refused to betray his brother Evil Ogel.[5]

Frozeen and General Evil encountered each other during numerous other missions, which always ended with each party allowing the other to escape. General Evil's repeated failures to kill or apprehend Frozeen eventually reached a breaking point during Frozeen's mission to an OGEL Empire warehouse in Morocco and collect data on a neural virus. There, Ogel Drones defied General Evil's orders and tried to kill Frozeen, forcing General Evil to kill his own drones to save Frozeen's life. However, General Evil shot Frozeen and took the data, and explained that he could no longer look out for his old friend. Still, Frozeen refused to back down and continued to do missions for Alpha Team.[5]

Frozeen was joined in Alpha Team's science division by Dr. Ronald Alexander, operating under the codename Dr. Rex.[5] Frozeen was surprised by how little Dr. Rex had changed in the past fifty years due to taking Jugend Serum.[2] They worked closely together in researching how to counteract Ogel's Mind-Control Orbs.[5]

After being promoted to elite agent, Frozeen was assigned to lead a squad of Alpha Team scientists to infiltrate an Ogel research facility in New Mexico. Although Frozeen and Dr. Rex spent days mapping out the facility and planning on a stealthy operation, the mission went awry when Frozeen accidentally landed on top of Little Bot, prompting a Worker Drone to sound the alarm. General Evil arrived with a squad of Elite Skeleton Drones, and Frozeen volunteered to distract the general while Dr. Rex and the other scientists completed the mission. They were successful, and Frozeen detonated the Panrahk 98 bombs placed throughout the facility before attempting to force General Evil to surrender. However, Dr. Rex had placed an additional Panrahk 98 that caused the catwalk to collapse beneath General Evil, who apparently fell to a fiery death, and Frozeen was forced to leave him behind.[5]

Afterward, Frozeen was furious with Dr. Rex, believing that they still had a chance of saving George Ogel. When Dr. Rex let slip that he was responsible for Talia Kaahs not showing up at the wedding, Frozeen accused Dr. Rex of betraying his own best friend, and they parted on bitter terms.[5] Frozeen never forgave Dr. Rex, even years later.[1]

During one mission with Alpha Team, Frozeen traveled to Antarctica and met King Salock and Queen Sarlaz.[1]

Mission Deep Sea[]

Frozeen continued to operate as an Alpha Team agent during Mission Deep Sea in 2002, with his primary project shifted to focus on reversing Ogel's mutations to marine life. During one mission, he found an old pirate shipwreck and retrieved golden coins, which he planned on gifting to Peter.[5]

During a mission to retrieve Ethanium crystals from a subterranean mine, Frozeen's Alpha Team Navigator was ambushed by a school of Ogel Mutant Killer Whales commanded by a Ogel Shark Sub. To his shock, Frozeen recognized the Shark Sub's pilot as General Evil, now forced to use a G.E. Body for life support. General Evil blamed Frozeen for the New Mexico incident, vowing to ruin him and tear down his legacy.[5]

Frozeen narrowly escaped using Alpha Team Emergency Maneuver 1-B, but the Navigator was critically damaged and he was forced to eject himself. He hitched a ride aboard the Trouble Sub, which brought him into the Goo Caverns. Frozeen decided to use Panrahk 2000 mines to destroy the Trouble Sub and severely disrupt the Evil OGEL Empire's supply chain. General Evil ordered a lockdown of the Goo Caverns, and Frozeen was left stranded without any means of communicating with the surface.[5]

Alpha Team was unable to retrieve Frozeen. Although his survival could not be definitively ruled out, he was believed to have perished after disappearing during the mission. Faith and Peter Abody were informed of Zachary's work with Alpha Team, and Peter chose to join Alpha Team and adopt his father's old codename, Frozeen.[5]

Although he was able to survive indefinitely in the Goo Caverns, a combination of old age, isolation, and constant exposure to Green Goo took their toll on Zachary Abody,[5] eventually driving him senile and giving him amnesia. He lost all memories on his past life, and lived a simple life in the Goo Caverns. He brought all his remaining artifacts of his past life to a cave he called his home.[1]

Dino Attack[]

Ben Gunn in the Goo Caverns

During the Dino Attack, Zachary Abody did not mind the presence of Mutant Dinos in the Goo Caverns. In fact, he enjoyed it, because he saw them as simply very large lizards that, when dead, meant lots of meat to eat.[1]

Shortly after killing and consuming most of a Mutant Lizard, he heard a loud explosion. He slowly crawled towards the area where he heard the noise, and found two Dino Attack Agents: Rex and Greybeard. After a brief conversation with them, in which Greybeard gave him the nickname "Ben Gunn", Ben Gunn decided to bring them to his cave, since he was excited to have company after so many years. Rex and Greybeard reluctantly followed.[1]

All the while, Ben Gunn rambled on about missions in life. Upon entering his cave, he explained that the artifacts of his previous life had no use to him other than decoration, but they might help Rex and Greybeard in their own missions in life. The two Dino Attack Agents looked around, and Rex found an old wallet with the photographs of Dr. Rex. He asked Ben Gunn about this, and while initially Ben Gunn did not seem to remember anything about it, he suddenly recalled his anger over Dr. Rex's betrayal. Thinking for a moment that Rex was Dr. Rex, he grabbed Rex and threatened to hurt him unless he left his cave. This short relapse of memory ended, and Ben Gunn returned to his strange self, dismissing the incident as a example of becoming senile over the years. He was disappointed to see Rex and Greybeard so eager to leave his cave then, but thought it best that he did not leave with them.[1]

He continued to wander around the Goo Caverns, wondering what the memory meant. Amidst his wandering, he encountered Spino, but ran away after the Dino Attack Agent offered cake.[8]

Later, he was nearby an abandoned Ogel Mining Compound when he was approached by Talia Kaahs. Talia explained that Rex was trapped inside the compound, and that they needed someone to distract the Brickspider Bot v1.0 and Cyber-Bully. Impressed by Talia's charm and wanting to help Rex, Ben Gunn agreed. Although he was supposed to ring the Ogel Mining Compound's doorbell then run away in a fashion of ding-dong-ditch, he did not escape after ringing the doorbell. As such, when Cyber-Bully opened the door, Ben Gunn explained that he was sent by 'a very fine woman' to distract them. Annoyed, Cyber-Bully grabbed Ben Gunn by the throat then threw him at a computer. Ben hit the machine headfirst, and then was buried under the rubble of the compound as it was wrecked by an Ogel Drilling Vehicle.[9]

Ben Gunn survived the eruption of Quadrant 14, and being hit in the head by rubble somehow cured his senility, although it did not restore his memory. Ben Gunn remained in what was left of the Goo Caverns, during which time he took notice of a XERRD outpost in one of the outer quadrants. There, he spied upon a meeting of XERRD's surviving members, who had fled to the outpost after the Dino Island Laboratory was destroyed, and overheard Dr. Rex vowing to destroy the Dino Attack Team on December 21, 2010.[10]

By the time Ben Gunn reached LEGO City to warn the Dino Attack Team, it was already December 20. He took a new suit from a wrecked clothing store and shaved off his beard before entering Dino Attack Headquarters.[10] Although he told receptionist Elizabeth Wilma that he wished to speak with Rex,[11] Ben Gunn realized that a mole hunt was going on and decided to participate. His efforts were unsuccessful, so he returned to the lobby to wait for Rex.[10]

There, Ben Gunn saw Rex, Greybeard, Zachary Virchaus, and Minerva Fabello pursuing the mole. Ben Gunn reacted by clotheslining the mole, incapacitating him long enough for him to be caught. Before Frozeen and Amanda Claw arrived, Ben Gunn slipped away for reasons unknown.[10]

As Rex and Amanda were leaving the lobby, Ben Gunn approached them and told them about what he saw in the Goo Caverns. Because of his changed appearance and cured senility, Rex did not immediately recognize Ben Gunn.[10] After Rex passed Ben Gunn's news on to the founding members of Dino Attack Team, Ben Gunn spoke with Rex one last time. Learning that Rex had his wedding ring, Ben Gunn encouraged Rex to marry Amanda.[12]

During the final battle for LEGO City, Ben Gunn took refuge in Dino Attack Headquarters. However, as the building fell under attack by Mutant Lizards and Mutant Raptors, Ben Gunn decided that it was wisest to seek out the Teleport Pad to Antarctica and evacuate. Reuniting with Greybeard, Ben Gunn received assistance from the old pirate in activating the Teleport Pad, and Ben Gunn was teleported to the Antarctica refugee facilities.[13]

Alternate Histories[]

Timeline 1958-B[]

On November 6, 1958, the wedding between George Ogel and Talia Kaahs took place as planned. Zachary Abody was pleased that the wedding reception went well, although he was troubled by the fact that Ronald Alexander never showed up.[6]

Abilities and Traits[]

Ben Gunn is very adept to the underground environment, able to see in the dark and crawl over the roughest of rocks. He eats for survival and not for pleasure, since the limited food supply of rats and lizards in the Goo Caverns do not taste good, but he describes himself as having lost his taste buds long ago.[1] Thanks to his rigorous physical training from Alpha Team,[5] he also displays great physical strength, flexibility, and reflexes despite his old age, as seen when he kills Mutant Lizards with his bare hands, when he bested both Rex and Greybeard,[1] and when he clotheslined Ata.[10]

When Rex and Greybeard first met Ben Gunn in the Goo Caverns, Ben Gunn was most easily described as senile. He saw the world in a peculiar way, and was known for rambling on about his philosophies.[1] He was very friendly and open, and even naive, not understanding the full importance of distracting Cyber-Bully and the Brickspider Bot.[9] Once his senility was cured, Ben Gunn became darker and more serious in personality, even though he still does not remember his original life before the Goo Caverns.[10]

Quotes[]

"The Minifig stood in a hunched, crouched position, almost cat-like. Long, almost tentacle-like, silver-white tendrils of hair fell from the Minifig's face, forming a beard, which was accompanied by a few equally-long strands of hair on the Minifig's scalp. The Minifig's skin was pale and dirty; wrinkled on his face, but bone-tight on his limbs and body. His clothes were worn down over many years, and now could be best described as black rags. He also at one point wore gloves and boots, but over time those two wore away, so the gloves lacked fingers and the boots lacked a bottom. With one hand and both feet, he effortlessly gripped the jagged rocks that he stood on; with his free hand, he held what looked like it was once a Mutant Lizard leg, but skinned and with bites missing."
Dino Attack RPG[1]
"A mission. Indeed. Everybody's always on a mission, for life itself is a mission. But of what? That's a mission to find out what our life's mission is. There's always a mission, always a quest. Whether it is the mission to save the world, or a mission to find that one missing sock to complete your sock pairs, we're always on a mission. As for my mission... I do not yet know its purpose."
— Ben Gunn[1]
"After all, you're trapped down here same as me... or perhaps you're free down here same as me... for down here is the greatest escape from the outside world... if there even is an outside world... or perhaps, I'm in the outside world, and what I'm hiding from is the inside world..."
— Ben Gunn[1]
"I am me, for I cannot be you. I am myself, for I cannot be anyone else. My name is but a word, that means nothing to me now, for it is not who I am."
— Ben Gunn[1]
"The isolation would drive any man mad after a time. There's also no telling what ill effects on my mind could come from constant exposure to Green Goo as well. Even if I am somehow found and rescued one day... would I even remember my own name?"
— Zachary Abody[5]

Trivia[]

  • Ben Gunn was nicknamed by Greybeard specifically after the Treasure Island character.[1]
  • PeabodySam openly refused to confirm Ben Gunn's true identity in Dino Attack RPG. Although this was a contentious decision among his fellow players, he felt that there was already sufficient evidence in the story for readers to figure it out on their own, and revealing it outright would risk the detriment to the more subtle storytelling. However, he did state during At War's End that he would only confirm Ben Gunn's identity if it could be done with satisfactory storytelling. Ten years later, he finally wrote Family Feud, which reveals Zachary Abody's fate and therefore also confirms Ben Gunn's backstory.
  • If PeabodySam and TakunuvaC01 had gone through with making an Alpha Team RPG based on LEGO Alpha Team's first year, then Zachary Abody was planned to be PeabodySam's Alpha Team primary character. His intended story arc was eventually adapted into Family Feud.
  • A minor running gag in Dino Attack: At War's End involved Frozeen and Ben Gunn never being in the same room at the same time, with Frozeen always entering the room as soon as Ben Gunn left, preventing the two characters from ever meeting face-to-face.[10][12][13] Jackson Lake and Brikman McStudz were unamused.
